Phase 4: Stabilization

Overview

This phase is designed to provide a template of healthy eating for life.
  • Continue with the goal of 60 to 80 grams of protein from food sources. Consume these proteins first at meals. Patients may need to consume a protein-rich food in between meals to meet their daily requirements. Try one of the following:
    • 6 ounce light yogurt or light Greek yogurt
    • 1 reduced fat string cheese
    • ¼ - ½ cup low fat cottage cheese.

Recommended Choices for the Stabilization Phase

Check off ingredients as you shop! Consume three balanced meals each day containing nutrient-rich foods such as:
  • Lean meat, poultry, pork, and fish
  • Low fat dairy products
  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Starches and whole grains prepared with minimal fat
  • Fats in small quantities (such as 1 teaspoon of margarine per meal)

Foods to Avoid

  • Foods and beverages high in calories
  • Breads and pasta

Tips

  • Consume three small meals each day.
  • Consume a source of protein at each meal, and consume it first. Continue taking your daily vitamin and mineral supplements.
  • Wait at least thirty minutes between eating and drinking. Chew your food thoroughly.
  • Stop eating whenever you feel satisfied.
  • If you cannot tolerate the amount of food at one meal, you may have to consume six smaller meals each day to be sure you're getting the proper nutrients, protein, vitamins, and minerals your body needs.
  • Avoid grazing
